An excerpt from ZEN PUTTING: Mastering the Mental Game on
the Greens.
Perpendicular Putts
Most people know to "go to
school" when one of their fellow competitors is putting before them
from the same direction as their putt. They watch to get more information
on how their own putt might break. However, few people realize that they
can also learn from observing a putt on a path that is perpendicular to
their own. How those putts react to the green around the hole provides
valuable knowledge about what will happen near the end of your putt.
Watch the perpendicular putt as it nears the hole. If it breaks toward
your ball, you know that your putt is uphill as it approaches the hole.
If the putt breaks away from your ball, your putt will be going downhill
at the hole.
If the perpendicular putt slows as it approaches the hole, the end of
your putt will break in the direction that putt came from. If the
perpendicular putt keeps its pace as it goes by the hole, then as your
putt nears the hole, it will break in the direction that putt was
heading.
Perpendicular putts can give you the little bit of extra information that
could mean holing a putt you would otherwise have missed, which makes
them well worth watching.
As a drill, work your way around in a circle, rolling ten-foot putts at
three-foot intervals. Notice how the break changes subtly from putt to
putt. Before long you'll be able to go to school on any putt from any
direction.
