Here’s what one of Doc’s phone students had to say
after the first lesson:
| “I am looking forward to my next
conversation with Dr. Joe ... Just based on our first
phone lesson, I have made changes in my thinking that
are having a profound effect on my game.” |

August AppearancesThe month began with a very special
invitational golf school at The Valley Club in Sun Valley,
Idaho. It included a lesson for a recent ambassador to Europe.
In July, Doc joined Peter Kessler on his “Making the
Turn” XM Satellite Radio show, to talk about The Open
Championship at Carnoustie; they’ll be on the air again on
August 14th to discuss the PGA Championship at Southern Hills.
Later that day, Doc will be joining the K-Earth 101
crew at Trump National Golf Course in Palos Verdes, California
for the USO Celebrity Golf Tournament. He’ll be playing with
his friend, Malcolm McDowell, who stars in the soon to be
released re-make of Halloween.

Tournament Notes: Notes from The Open Championship at
CarnoustieThe eighteenth hole at Carnoustie was the star
of the Open Championship once again. After what happened to
Jean Van de Velde in 1999, it was hard to believe that Padraig
Harrington would put it in the Barry Burn twice, and have to
scramble to save double bogey. He said afterward that if that
hole had cost him the Open Championship, it would have been
hard to ever play golf again.
Nick Faldo had a great
comment on putting on Sunday at the Open: it feels different,
and what you need to do is recognize that it does feel
different, how it feels, and what to do about it. What do you
do about it? The most important key is to stay with the
routine you’re most familiar and comfortable with. If the
greens are fast, give yourself permission to leave a couple of
putts an inch or two short rather than run them by and leave
yourself a tester.
Sergio complained of a long wait on
the 18th fairway, standing there holding a three-iron for what
seemed like 15 minutes. Just like Colin Montgomery last year
at Winged Foot, he could have put it back in the bag, passed
the time talking with his caddie about something else, and
then started fresh when the green was clear and it was his
turn to play.
Peter Kessler asked me what I thought
Sergio and Padraig were going through on 18. The first time
through, Padraig was protecting a lead and Sergio was playing
to win – advantage Sergio. However, when Sergio’s putt lipped
out, their attitudes changed going into the playoff – Sergio
having to keep grinding after a demoralizing bogey, but
Padraig with a new lease on life, much more upbeat and
energized because even after making double he now had a fresh
start and another chance. And he made the most of it.
