NOTABLE NEWS

Vijay Singh - Dr. Parent worked with Vijay prior to the Nissan Open at Riviera, the Accenture Match Play Championship, and most recently, the Shell Houston Open, which Vijay won going away.

-Vijay’s 22 under par was the lowest four-round total on tour this year. It also tied the tournament record set in 1952.

-Vijay ended his longest winless stretch on the PGA Tour since he first played in 1992. Singh had not won since the 2000 Masters - a string of 50 official PGA Tour starts. (He did win back-to-back tournaments in Asia last year.)

 - Vijay set a personal best at the Houston Open for most strokes under Par for 72 holes - 22-under (Previous best: 18-under).

John Riegger - following consultations with Dr. Parent, John finished 8th at the 2002 Honda Classic, his first top ten finish in 115 tournaments on the PGA Tour.  In his interviews with the news media, John credited his work with Dr. Parent for helping him get off to better starting rounds. Breaking the course record in the first round is as good as it can get!

Images for Putting

(Note:  This is something Dr. Parent shared with Vijay Singh prior to the Houston Open.)

To keep your target in mind, imagine that the hole is a clock face, with 6 o’clock toward your ball. Pick the “time” on the clock rim where you expect the ball to enter the hole. For example, you may see a right-to-left breaking putt entering the hole at 4:30, or a left-to-right putt with just a bit of break entering at 7:00. That time on the clock is your effective center of the hole.

To help you stroke your putt with the correct speed, keep in your mind an image of how the ball will enter the hole. Thinking to yourself about how hard to swing the club while putting is a sure-fire recipe for disaster. Most every golfer has thought, "Make sure you get it to the hole," and then sent the ball six feet past it. The thought, "It's downhill, so go easy on it," usually results in a tentative, decelerating stroke that leaves the ball well short of the hole. Instead, on an uphill putt, imagine the ball diving into the hole, striking the middle of the back wall. This gives your body the message to stroke the ball firmly, without you needing to think, "Hit it hard." On a downhill putt, imagine the ball just trickling over the front edge. This gives your body the message to stroke the ball gently, but without the hesitation that comes from the fear of the ball going far past the hole.

When you putt with imagination, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how many putts pour into the hole exactly the way you imagined!
